A Message from NorthStar Care Community's President and CEO
Dear friends,
It’s been more than a year since Centrica Care Navigators’ affiliation with NorthStar Care Community became official. The knowledge the Centrica team has brought to all of NorthStar has been invaluable. We’re proud to say that the collaboration has made our service even more effective every day — without giving up on any of the excellent compassionate care you expect and deserve.
Centrica Care Navigators is still going strong in southwest Michigan, just like it has been for more than 43 years.

Remembering a “Rey of Sunshine”
Every family that receives support from Centrica Care Navigators can turn to a comprehensive team of specialists to help with day-to-day care of their loved one. Rob and Lynda Bauckham of Portage said the support of the entire team, from nurses to music therapists, helped their daughter Rey during her time in care.
“When the nurses left, they had tears in their eyes,” Rob said. “Rey would look forward to visits from the music therapists, even if she didn’t seem like she was feeling well. They would make up rap songs about Rey.”
When she was feeling strong enough, Rey enjoyed playing along with her music therapist during their visits. Each appointment ended with the classic song “You Are My Sunshine,” fitting given her family nickname, “Rey of Sunshine.”
Rey liked being outside, especially at the water’s edge in Portage Creek Bicentennial Park in Portage. She would sit on the bench near where canoes would start their journey down the creek and simply watch the water as the sun shone down.
Lynda and Rob found a way to memorialize Rey after she died: They found an artisan in Hawaii who blended her ashes into glass suncatchers. The suncatchers are on display in the Bauckhams’ home; Lynda also has necklaces made by the same artist. They chose an orange-yellow color for their glass to honor their “Rey of Sunshine.”

Grief support for every family
Grieving is part of the end-of-life care experience for everyone, and it’s not something that suddenly begins the day a loved one dies. The Centrica Grief Support team talks about “anticipatory grief,” a feeling of loss that someone might have before a patient dies.
Like all grieving, anticipatory grief is unique to each person. And like all grieving, it doesn’t have to be done alone, in silence. Centrica Care Navigators offers a variety of grief support groups throughout the year.
At a meeting, grievers can gather with others who have had a similar kind of loss to their own. They can talk if they like, or just listen. They are guided by experienced grief support counselors and trained volunteers in a comfortable and accepting environment.
The grief support groups we offer change throughout the year, as we see the need in our community for particular kinds of care and help. You’ll find an up-to-date calendar of the groups that are available on our website. They include, but are not limited to:
- Grief Connection: An ongoing drop-in grief support group, both in person and virtual.
- Centrica Journeys: A year-round support group for children grieving the loss of a loved one.
- Grief Walkers: An ongoing drop-in social support walking group, meeting year-round at Portage Creek Bicentennial Trail.
- OutFront Grief Circle: A grief group for members of the LGBTQ+ community age 18 and up.
- Grieving Parents: For parents grieving the death of a child of any age beyond infancy.
- Spouse and Partner Loss: A support group for adults grieving the death of a spouse or partner.
- Parent Loss: A support group for adults grieving the death of a parent.
Camp Good Grief
We are excited to announce our first-ever Journeys Camp Good Grief on June 27, 2025, at Girl Scout Camp Merrie Woode in Plainwell. This free, one-day event is open to grieving children ages 5-17 in our community.
At camp, we will combine grief education and support with traditional camp activities, creating a day that is both fun and healing. Our goal is to create a caring community where every child feels understood and supported, helping them feel less alone in their grief journey.
Space is limited, and registration is required. A staff member will be in touch to further explore if Journeys Camp Good Grief is a good fit for your camper.

For September 1, 2024, to February 28, 2025, more than 1,000 contributed. Your generosity helps us provide grief support services for our caregivers as well as the community. It also ensures that end-of-life care is available for everyone who needs it, regardless of financial circumstances.
