Letter from the CEO
Dear Friends,
After two years of struggle and uncertainty during the pandemic, it’s time for hope and anticipation. We navigated the challenges as a community and demonstrated what we have always known: we are better together. This year is filled with excitement while we continue to support your needs under our new name, Centrica Care Navigators. We are the same community-based nonprofit agency that you have known and trusted for 40 years. We are honored to continue serving our community’s hospice and grief support needs, including the reopening of Centrica Adult Day, our program for seniors.
Our focus continues to center on you, our community neighbors, and our mission and values as your community partner. Centrica Care Navigators’ services have grown and we thank you for your continued support, trust, and invitations into your homes and your lives. We work hard to offer service in our dedicated hospice sites, adult day, grief support programs and much more in all 10 counties we reach.

Centrica Care Navigators
On the Lake and in the Air
Joan Payne is a Centrica Care Navigators patient and an experienced hot air balloon pilot. She earned her private and commercial balloon pilot’s license after a 1984 safari trip in Kenya.
Joan lives near Paw Paw now, but she trained to fly hot air balloons in California. She met her husband Orville during her training. Later, they moved to Colorado, and that’s where she learned the value of end-of-life care, first for Orville and then for herself.
These days, her care team is helping her keep active, instead of simply waiting until it’s time to die. She says she wants to spend her time doing the things she wants to and is still capable of doing.

2021 Highlights
- Hospice Care of Southwest Michigan officially became Centrica Care Navigators.
- The agency celebrated 40 years of service.
- The agency moved its corporate office to 7100 Stadium Drive in Kalamazoo on February 22, 2021.
- Client admissions increased by 29% to 2,458.
- The agency ranked above the national average in quality of patient care and family experience of care based on the results of the CAHPS® Hospice Survey.
- 96 new employees were hired for an agency total of 310.
- The Michigan Health Endowment Fund Board of Directors awarded the agency a grant to support a telehealth program pilot.
- Grief Support services were offered to over 2,117 people who had a loved one die in our program. Grief support counselors made 1,807 contacts in 2021, a 29% increase over 2020.
- The Grief 101 program served a total of 52 children and teens throughout the year.
- Journeys had 55 participants, an increase from 2020.

A New Dawn for Centrica Adult Day
It’s time for the long-awaited grand opening of Centrica Adult Day, our site for daytime visits at Oakland Drive and Centre Road. After years of planning and preparation, we’re opening the doors May 2.
“I have been asked at least once a week for the past two years: When do you think Adult Day will open again?” says Rachel Dedes, director of community programs.
Centrica Adult Day is a place for our guests to be active and find a community. They can spend hours there every day, enjoying music, art and exercise. There’s a dining area for conversations and nutritious lunches. Each guest is supported by a skilled, professional team, including a registered nurse, life enrichment coordinator, certified nursing assistants and a medication technician.
Centrica Adult Day is a new name for a service we’ve offered for almost 13 years. We weren’t well-known to the community under our old name. We’ve made a lot of changes since then!
You’ll see more of our volunteers. They will greet guests when they arrive and join in the activities we do every day. More friendly faces will make visits to Centrica Adult Day even more enjoyable for many.

Your generosity helps us provide grief support services for our caregivers as well as the community. It also ensures that end-of-life care is available for everyone who needs it, regardless of financial circumstances.
