A Message from NorthStar Care Community’s President and CEO
Dear friends,
Since announcing our affiliation early this year, Centrica Care Navigators and the entire NorthStar Care Community have been working hard to make sure the best of our services are coming together. We want to provide the most comprehensive care available to all our patients and their families.
The NorthStar Care Community reaches throughout the state of Michigan, but Centrica Care Navigators is staying right where it is, a vital partner with families in southwest Michigan. Your contributions help our member organization provide services to so many people in need. Your money stays local, too, giving to the communities where you live and work.
We’re proud of our success as the largest end-of-life care provider in Michigan, but we’re not going to rest on our laurels. We’re always growing and refining our services to better provide for our friends and neighbors across the state. Remembering a loved one on the golf course
For the past six years, Kellie Simmons has hosted the Par 3 Red Tee Challenge, a one-of-a-kind golf event held at Lake Monterey Golf Course in Dorr, Mich. While there are many worthwhile golf outings throughout southwest Michigan (including Centrica Care Navigators’ own Golf ‘Fore’ Hospice), the Red Tee Challenge is the only one that honors Kellie’s husband Chris.
Chris Simmons was a 2018 patient with Centrica Care Navigators. Years after his death, Kellie has still not forgotten the service he and their family received from our nurses, hospice aides and his entire care team.
“Centrica was there for his transition to the next stage in life,” Kellie says. “I remember feeling I’m not going through this alone; they were there to teach me.”
A quality time in hospice care
Chris and Kellie met more than 25 years ago as neighbors and married in September 2004. They lived their lives together in the Kalamazoo area, where Chris managed 500 computer servers worldwide for a computer manufacturer, all from his home office. When he wasn’t at work, Chris enjoyed boating and getting behind the grill in the summer.
In 2016, he was diagnosed with stage 4 colon cancer. He went through a series of treatments at Bronson Hospital over the next two years, but in January 2018, doctors recommended that Chris seek hospice care. He was at the point where it was better to focus not on seeking a cure, but on making the remaining time as high-quality as it could be.
Bronson Hospital staff referred Chris to Centrica Care Navigators. Chris stayed at home during his time in hospice, giving Kellie an opportunity to help care for him herself. She also had support from Mary Grace, Chris’ regular nurse. Mary and Kellie worked together to help Chris with basic tasks, like taking a shower. But much more importantly, attention from a hospice care team gave Chris and Kellie more time together; Chris lived 21 days from his admission to hospice services.
Reading around the world
Chris was a popular, outgoing person who had a lot of friends and family who wanted to stay in touch during his time in hospice care. Responding to all their calls was a little overwhelming for Kellie, who responded by starting a blog of the days and weeks of their time together. “I was shocked how many people were reading globally,” she says, though because of his job, Chris knew people around the world. “People said they got up in the morning and went online to see how we were doing.”
Though Kellie no longer posts new entries on the blog, you can still read it on the Red Tee Challenge website; it is part of the story of Chris’ life. The website is also where Kellie posts information about the golf event and encourages everyone to contribute to Centrica Care Navigators in Chris’ honor. “I wanted to keep honoring him,” Kellie says. “He loved to have a good time.”

Patience and caring: The benefits of pet therapy
“It’s been a really rewarding experience to interact with people who share a love for dogs, despite the challenges they face every day,” says Lindsay, who visits patients with her golden retriever, Rae.
Even people who don’t love dogs are glad to know pet therapy is available to Centrica Care Navigators’ patients who need a special kind of companionship. The role of a therapy pet is one that a lot of dogs are well-suited to – they make visits to hospice patients at their home or in a care facility. Some patients simply like to see a dog, or maybe pet it while it sits calmly. Other times, dogs rest while patients reminisce about their own pets over the years.
Currently, we have 10 therapy pets – all dogs – visiting with patients throughout our 10-county service area, including two golden retrievers, a greyhound, and a pair of poodles who are actually brother and sister.
Every week, pets (and their volunteer owners) make pre-arranged stops in patient rooms, where they rest quietly while they are petted. For some patients, a visit is the highlight of the month. We also offer “baseball cards” with each dog’s photo and a few fun facts (Sophie loves tummy rubs, while Dexter’s favorite once-in-a-while special treat is pizza) to help remind patients of their favorite visitors.
Volunteer opportunities
Patient Companionship Volunteers – Support patients or family caregivers by assisting with hobbies, such as playing cards and board games, reading or simply talking.
Caregiver Relief Volunteers – Provide family caregivers a much-needed break so they can run errands, attend important appointments, or just refresh and recharge.
Story Catcher – Volunteers capture a person’s life story by using an audio recorder. They listen and assist the patient in telling their story in their own voice.
Centrica Journeys – Volunteers support children who are grieving the death of a loved one.
Pet Therapy – Volunteer with your cat or dog to offer emotional support.
Administrative – Help our team with tasks around the office.
Veteran Services – Provide companionship and lend an ear to a fellow veteran.
Veteran Pinning Ceremonies – Publicly acknowledge the military service and sacrifices patients and families have made.

For March 1, 2024, to August 31, 2024, more than 700 contributed. Your generosity helps us provide grief support services for our caregivers as well as the community. It also ensures that end-of-life care is available for everyone who needs it, regardless of financial circumstances.
Contributions from corporations, church groups, foundations and other community partners throughout our 10-county region help us reach our service goals.
