For Christie and her two children, Orianna and Cole, their world stopped when Christie’s husband suffered an unexpected cardiac event that took his life. That day, when her kids came home from school, she had to tell them their dad had passed away.

In search of support, Christie found Centrica Care Navigators’ Journeys program—a free grief counseling program for children, teens and their families led by experienced counselors and volunteers. Right away, she knew it was what they needed to find healing and comfort.

At no-cost to participants, Centrica Journeys works with community partners to bring healing and connection through light-hearted activities like equine therapy. In addition to regular meetings, Centrica Journeys meets twice a month at the Cheff Therapeutic Riding Center.
Orianna and Cole look forward to learning about horses, riding and grooming them, meeting caring volunteers and spending time with other kids their age. Orianna, who wants to be a veterinarian someday, says with a smile, “Getting to ride a horse just makes you feel happy – like you can do anything!”
As a parent, the support Christie receives from Centrica Journeys is like a weight lifted off her shoulders. “This is a great program. It gives kids a way to talk about different aspects of grief and learn tools to cope with or understand that other people have the same type of feelings. It is amazing to have so many caring adults spend time with my kids.”
